Cold & Flu Season

It is again upon us, the coughing, sneezing, fevers and sore throats. Welcome to cold and flu season. I want to start this post by stating that a cold or flu is not necessarily an indication of poor health. In fact, a cold or flu can help to challenge our immune system and make it stronger. However, what a person should be concerned about at this time of the year, is the length of time it takes to recover from a cold or flu, and the frequency to which cold or flu symptoms may present.

It is well recognised that a cold or flu, lasting no more than 4 to 6 days, and occurring less than twice a year, is a sign of a robust, healthy, adult immune system. It is often the case, with a healthy immune system that symptoms can subside within 1 to 2 days. However, this is a gold standard that, in my experience, is very rarely observed. The majority of clients that I first see, present with ongoing infections that take weeks or months to subside, only to return 1 to 2 weeks following reprieve. This being so, the ongoing cycle of cold or flu symptoms can result in long bouts of fatigue and lethargy and increased absenteeism from work and study. However, before any student belts out an almighty cheer, it is important to realise that missing class, puts you further behind, and increasing levels of stress can lead to an unhealthy immune system and place you back on the merry-go-round of cold or flu symptoms. Moreover, it is the feeling of not being able to operate at 100 percent capacity, always falling alseep on the lounge watching television, a constant heaviness, brain fog, poor concentration and memory and/or a flare up of a previous condition. If you are feeling this way, then you should make an appointment to see me at my Adamstown Clinic.

So what can I do for you. It is suffice to say that most people are aware of the basic foundations of treating cold or flu symptoms. For example, the use of vitamin C, increasing water content and a good night/s sleep. However, these basic principles are designed to assist those with a robust immune system. For those individuals with flagging immune systems, your immune system can be strengthened and improved by utilsing a range of specific dietary strategies, herbal tonics and supplementation. It is important to point out that the herbal tonics and supplements I carry cannot be found in Woolworths or Coles, and in many cases, are not available at health foods stores. The reason for this, is that only qualified practitioners can prescribe these products. I am able to prescribe these supplements because I am trained and educated to know what these supplements can do for you, how specific supplements interact with others and their interaction with prescription medications. For example, I carry a supplement known as Zinc Piccolinate, which is a double strength immune complex designed to maintain a healthy immune system. Health food shops will not offer this form of zinc, the actual zinc that will improve your immunity. I also carry a specialised range of supplements from a company called Panaxea, which can not be sold in compounding chemists or health food shops, even if a health care professional, such as a naturopath, is working at that shop. The most effective supplement, by Panaxea, that I have found in strengthening the immune system and more importantly reducing the time it takes to recover from a cold or flu is AV/AT, an anti-fever, anti-inflammatory and immune enhancing supplement. In addition, to these supplements, I also carry herbs such as Andrographis, the most notable immune enhancing herb known to the West, particularly in patients with upper respiratory tract infections (sinusitis, pharyngitis, common cold, bronchitis, laryngitis).

The above supplements and nutritional strategies I use can be implemented for children of all ages. For instance, one of my previous clients, an 8 year old girl, presenting with ongoing rhinosinusitis (sinus) and recurring colds and infections, had been following my program for 6 months. In that 6 months, she had not required any antibiotic therapy. A child who previously had been using 2 courses of antibiotics a season, for the past 5 years. It is also important, to point out that once the immune system is strengthened you will not need to be on a supplement. Maintenance of a healthy immune system will be founded on good quality nutrition and sound quality sleep.
